Canon in the Wind

for violin and cello by Anne Ku

work in progress - for review only, not for distribution

composed in May 2004

The simplest canon is a round, that goes round and round. Remember "Row, row, row your boat, gently down the stream" ?
The first voice starts. A few seconds later, the next voice repeats what the first voice started. You can keep
going forever. Pachel's famous canon has also an ostinato in the bass.

I first wrote this canon in the wind for two wind instruments with which I was most familiar: flute and bassoon.

When it came to performing it, I couldn't find a bassoonist who was available. I met an exchange student from Norway who was eager
to show me the viola. So I replaced the bassoon with a viola. It begins like this:

And ends like this:

Like all my earlier pieces, this one is short.

Premiered by Miren Ceberio (violin) and Allard Hartkamp (cello) on 10 November 2004 in
Utrecht Conservatory Composers Concert, room K108.
