Orvieto: a walled city

The Etruscans were there centuries before the Romans. Narrow streets of cobbled stone, a church in every corner, Orvieto is home to the white wine Orvieto Classico and truffles (tartufo) and mushroom (porcini). Three days are not enough to indulge in Etruscan cuisine, wine, and sights. Must sees: the duomo and Saint Patrick’s Well. Must eats: truffle and mushroom pasta.

Music for piano solo: “Nocturne (the Moon Their Mistress)” by Chris Williams, performed by Michele Chiasserini, recorded live in Cortona, 21 July 2007

Orvieto townhall?
Orvieto
Stay inside the city
churches, hotels, B&B’s
Door to the fortress
Walls of Orvieto
Saint Patrick’s Well
Two spiral staircases descend down 12 windows
Over 260 shallow stairs
By the 3rd window, the temperature changes
It’s cool down there
And bright up there
In the centre of the well, you hear yourself
Views of Orvieto
Posing
Another side of Orvieto
Siesta time
Magnificent walls
Grotte del Funaro:
restaurant in a cave
Did not visit the underground city of Orvieto: maybe next time?
